Important Information Regarding Your Deliveries
While being home for a package delivery is not always required, it is essential for several key reasons, including preventing theft, protecting against weather damage, and receiving items that require a direct signature. Your presence ensures that the package is safely and correctly delivered into your hands.
Critical reasons to be present for package delivery
- Preventing theft: Unattended packages are vulnerable to "porch pirates". Being home ensures your valuable or sensitive items are not stolen from your doorstep.
- Protecting against weather damage: When packages are left exposed to the elements, they are at risk of being damaged by rain, snow, or excessive heat. Receiving the package personally safeguards your order from the weather.
- Inspecting the package: Your presence at the time of delivery allows you to immediately inspect the package for any signs of damage or tampering before accepting it.
- Fulfilling signature requirements: For high-value items, controlled substances (like medication or alcohol), or important documents, a carrier may require a direct signature from an adult. This ensures proof of delivery and protects both you and the sender. Without a signature, the carrier will not leave the package.
- Addressing delivery issues: If you are home, you can quickly address any delivery issues, such as a package being delivered to the wrong address. This prevents a misdelivered item from being claimed by someone else.
What happens if you are not home?
- Redelivery attempts: The carrier may leave a notice and attempt to redeliver the package on subsequent business days.
- Holding at a facility: After a few failed attempts, the package may be held at a local shipping facility, requiring you to go and pick it up with a valid ID.
- Return to sender: If the package is not collected, it will eventually be returned to the sender.
- Loss of package: In the event of theft or damage after a "doorstep" delivery, you may have little recourse depending on the carrier's and sender's policies.
